The resume of the International Conference on "Vision of Bandung after 50 years - Facing New Challenges" held in Cairo 1-3 March 2005, at Pyramisa hotel
Afro-Asian Peoples Solidarity Organization was the creation of the Bandung spirit, a peoples movement of the Afro-Asian world. It was nothing but appropriate that after 50 years of this historic conference, time had come to take stock of the world situation to forge a stronger movement of the people, to meet new challenges.
The era of Bandung (1955-1975) An assessment
More than 30 years ago the principal heads of state of those Asian and African countries that had regained political independence met for the first time at Bandung. The experience of the new authorities they represented was still slight: India and Indonesia had been independent for fewer than ten years; Communist China for only five, and it was only three years since the Egyptian monarchy had bowed out of history. The battle for the achievement of the historic task of independence was not over: the first Vietnamese war was only just finished and the second was already in prospect, the Korean War ended with the status quo, the Algerian war was in full flow, decolonization of sub-Saharan Africa was not even yet foreseen, and the drama of Palestine was in its first phase.

40th Anniversary of Mahdy ben Baraka
At the outset, I would like to extend my thanks to the Secretariat of AAPSO for inviting me to attend the commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of Bandung Conference. This invitation indeed honours my father’s, El-Mahdy ben Baraka, memory .He was one of the primary actors in the Afro-Asian Solidarity movement that extended to Latin America. He carried, in his heart and mind, the principles of Bandung. Eventually, he fell as a martyr on 29 October 1965 in his struggle against reactionary trends, imperialism, colonialism, neo-colonialism and Zionism.
AFRICA’S SOLIDARITY WITH PALESTINE
Many people think that the cause of Palestine resembles that of Vietnam, Algeria or even South Africa. But although there is a resemblance in some aspects, there is something entirely unique about our cause. What we have been and still are confronted with is not merely foreign invasion, occupation and even settlement. All this has been experienced by other countries. But no other country has been confronted with a plan to liquidate its national identity, as has happened in the case of Palestine, nor confronted a plan to empty a country of its people as has happened in the case of the Palestinian people. It goes beyond anything previously recorded in modern history.
---- Yasser Arafat
As mentioned in the earlier report submitted by me to the P.S., the CONGO Assembly focussed its attention to the on going activities of the civil society with the UN. In the panel discussion several speakers pointed out the need for closer relationship with the UN. Specially on the following issues of the millennium goals,
NAM and Contemporary World
The Non-Aligned Movement has covered a long distance since its inception in 1961 at Belgrade, the venue of the First NAM Summit. India's first Prime Minister Pt. Nehru, one of the founding father of NAM, described the non-aligned as the policy of friendship amongst nations. From its very inception the Non-Aligned Movement has successfully worked for promotion of friendship and cooperation amongst member states, end of domination and establishment of peace in the world at large.
