STOP THE SUFFERINGS !
SAVE  THE UNITY OF SUDAN !
****************************

The Afro-Asian Peoples' Solidarity Organisation- AAPSO- is deeply concerned by the dangerous development of the situation in Sudan.

The lagging peace process between the Sudanese government and the SPLA which is expected to end the deadly decades-long conflict, and, yet, no sign of final deal in sight, has raised fears of a indefinitely delayed matter. This peace process should not be taken in hostage by

the event in Darfur, or vice-versa.. What is important to be taken into consideration in the present circumstances is that the Darfur problem  with its political and humanitarian issues, should be regarded as an integral part of the global peace process in Sudan. The crisis in Darfur is one of the aspects of  overall crisis in this war-torn country. In light of the deteriorating situation in this western region of Sudan, it is important that the very roots cause of the crisis should be prioritarily addressed. Failing to take such necessary action could lead  the human tragedy to  a more disastrous consequences.

The current crisis in Darfur has mainly been caused by years of political and economic neglect and marginalisation of the 6.5 million population of the region inhabited by Arab tribes and African  tribes. This has created a situation that triggered  indignation, frustration and unrest among them, provoking the Sudanese government to brutally react in letting the Janjaweeds, Arab cattles breeders, ignit bloody confrontations against these local tribes,  massacring people and destroying farms and burning hunts. The agreement between the government and the Sudanese Liberation Movement and the Justice and Equality Movement reached  earlier in April has failed to be implemented.

No less important is the fact that the success in resolving the Sudanese problem relies largely  on a balanced way with regard the economic, social and political traitment, the sharing of wealth and its equitable distribution and the general conduct of national affairs and its attributes. First and foremost, a political reform is required in dealing with all problems in  Sudan.

In order to avoid an outbreak of another civil war , which could add more to the millions of dead and many others to be displaced or forced to flee the country; in order to safeguard the unity and territorial integrity of Sudan,  the Sudanese people as a whole should be involved in all the processes aiming at building confidence among them, giving the possibility of convening a national conference of reconciliation. In doing so, Sudan will have at its side the African Union which has been actively embarked in the efforts to diffuse the crisis, the international community, all peace-loving peoples in Africa and in the world. Strong political will and unwavering determination from the side of the Sudanese leadership to solve the Sudanese problem are badly needed. Without the Sudanese mass taking part in the country's political life and the management of national interests, the country is doomed to failure even collapse in its task of national reconstruction and economic and social development. Participatory democracy should not be an empty word.

The people of Sudan in particular and the African people in general can not afford to allow the Sudanese crisis to dangerously develop further and to last indefinitely, threatening peace and stability in the region as well as accross the African continent.

AAPSO hopes that new stable, democratic and peaceful Sudan will emerge after the overall crisis is overcome paving the way to progress and prosperity for the Sudanese people.
